Borussia Dortmund play host to Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday at the Signal Iduna Park in their opening fixture of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season.
BVB went toe-to-toe with Bayern for most of last season but they ran out of gas at the end and finished runners-up. A home loss to Bayern in the homestretch ultimately did them in as Bayern established a cushion from that win and never looked back.
The new season presents a new opportunity and Dortmund are certainly raring to go. They come into this game on the back of a 5-0 victory over MSV Duisburg in the first round of the German Cup as star player Jadon Sancho, new signing Jude Bellingham, Thorgan Hazard, Giovanni Reyna and captain Marco Reus all scored.
They will need to be at their best throughout the season and hope for a Bayern drop off if they are to stand any chance of challenging them again for the title. With the transfer window still open, speculations about Jadon Sancho remains but coach Lucien Favre is fully focused on the business on the pitch as his front office deals with the off-the-pitch matters.
Borussia Monchengladbach also had a successful outing last season as they pipped Leverkusen to the fourth and final Champions League slot, thanks to some terrific performances in the second half of the season. They, therefore, come into this season with an air of confidence as one of the German representatives in Europe’s premier cup competition.
They showed no mercy against lower-division opponents Oberneuland on the first round of the German Cup, thrashing them 8-0 to make it a run of four straight wins stretching back to the end of last season.
They’ve had particular difficulty against Dortmund though, losing their last 10 games, including both of their games last season, albeit very close encounters that ended in single goal wins for Dortmund. If their dream of solidifying their top-four status is to be realized, they will need to at the very least get positive outcomes from these kinds of fixtures.
Both of these teams qualified for the Champions League thanks largely from their output in the final third. Dortmund’s philosophy of identifying young exciting talents and developing them into superstars appears to be in full force if the signing of Jude Bellingham is anything to go by. He joins a cast of talented forwards including Sancho who is coming off his best season, alongside lanky striker Erlin Haaland who was also a revelation after signing in mid-season. Borussia Monchengladbach also boasts of great forwards like Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram who also had great seasons. With such calibre of attacking players from both sides and based on how both teams play, we are anticipating an open-ended affair with lots of goal scoring opportunities.
