Schalke 04 vs Bayern Munich

Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen plays host to an enticing German Cup quarter finals match pitting five time winners Schalke against holders Bayern Munich.

SCHALKE 04

Schalke are going through a particularly rough patch in the Bundesliga at the moment. They are winless in their last 5 games, with two draws and three losses, the last two losses being 5-0 and 3-0 against RB Leipzig and FC Koln respectively.

In the cup however, it has been smooth sailing, albeit with a bit of luck in the draws. They played against lower ranked opponents Drochtersen and Arminia Bielefeld who they beat 5-0 and 3-2 respectively before facing off Hertha Berlin in the last round, coming from 2-0 down to draw level at 2-2 before a Benito Raman strike deep into extra time sealed a dramatic 3-2 win to earn them this date with the holders.

The odds are massively stuck against them but they will fancy their chances against a German team that has been beset by some injuries to key players. Schalke themselves are also dealing with an injury crisis, particularly at the back which complicates matters for them considering they are going up against a very well-oiled forward line. Dependable defense duo Kabak and Omar Mascarell both suffered terrible injuries against Koln at the weekend with the latter ruled out for the rest of season.

Coach Wagner will replace Kabak with loanee Todibo at the centre of defence with both Stambouli and Sane still unavailable. Up front, Burgstaller might get the nod to start in this game and he will be looking to repay his coach’s faith by finding the back of the net when opportunities come his way.

BAYERN MUNICH

Bayern have not been particularly dominant in this competition this season. They haven’t kept a clean sheet in the last three rounds and interestingly have only been winning by a one goal margin in the last two rounds, a 2-1 victory against Bochum and a hard fought 4-3 win over Hoffenheim in the last round.

With so much on their plate, it is understandable why this particular competition doesn’t feature high on their agenda. They have had bigger fish to fry. The Bundesliga title run is as competitive as it has been in years. Plus, they are in stupendous form in the champions league this season and are one of the hot favorites to win it all.

That said, a treble is still very much on the cards. With Dortmund and RB Leipzig out of this cup, Schalke are one of the few remaining teams that can give them a run for their money in their bid to defend this trophy. In both of their league meetings however, Bayern have run out comfortable winners. Cups games are a different kettle of fish altogether. The stakes are usually very different and magic tends to happen every so often.

Bayern are beset by some injuries to key members of the team. Top of them being leading striker Robert Lewandowski who is out for up to four weeks with a knee injury. Niklas Sule and Ivan Perisic are still sidelined. Kingsley Coman picked up a knock in their midweek win against Chelsea in London. Jerome Boateng has not travelled due to a stomach bug while Lucas Hernandez also failed to make the trip due to a slight tendon irritation.

Coach Flick indicated he wanted to keep changes at a minimum but in light of these injuries he will have no choice but to make some rotations to the squad. Teenage sensation Joshua Zirkzee will most likely get the nod to lead the lines in the absence of Lewandowski. He will have a stellar supporting cast of the trio of Coutinho, veteran Thomas Muller and high-flying Serge Gnabry. They will be called upon to make up for the absence of leading goal getting Lewandowski and will be more than eager to prove that they can get the job done.

BETTING PREDICTION

With the envisioned changes in both lineups with youngsters getting run-outs, we expect an action-packed game with lots of thrills and spills. The Royal Blues are stumbling a bit in the Bundesliga at the moment and will look to this game not only as an outlet but also an opportunity to re-invigorate their fading European slot campaign in the Bundesliga.

The Bavarians are coming into the game in high spirits. A treble is certainly in the offing and they will pull all stops to accomplish it. With Schalke being one of the strong remaining opponents left, they will look to make their intent clear with a decisive victory which they should get on account of the quality of players they still possess despite the injury bug.
