Red hot Arsenal will launch their quest for Europa League glory on Thursday evening when they as travel to face off with Swiss champions FC Zurich in Group A at Kybunpark. Mikel Arteta’s side finished fifth in the Premier League last season to punch their direct ticket to this tournament. The Swiss champs meantime were looking to make the Champions League but failed to make the cut in the qualifying rounds and had to settle for this as a consolation.

FC ZURICH
A 5-4 aggregate loss to Azerbaijan outfit Qarabag in the second qualifying round of the 2022/23 Champions League competition ended Zurich’s adventure in the top-tier continental showpiece. Instead, the Swiss champs turned their guns in the Europa League qualifying and put five goals past Linfield to earn a place in the Europa League group stage.
At home, things are not so rosy. Their defence of the domestic title hasn’t quite gone according to plan. They are yet to register a win in 7 league games this season and they come into this match on the back of three losses on the trot at home.
Coach Foda will be looking for a response from his charges here but this will be a tough task against the visitors who have looked remarkably good in the Premier League to start the season.
ARSENAL
After seemingly having the fourth and final Champions League slot in their control towards the end of last season, Arsenal completely bottled the final league matches of the 2021/22 season and that allowed their North London bitter rivals Tottenham to literally take that valuable 4th position from their mouths. They, therefore, begin their fifth Europa League campaign.
That said, despite not winning the Europa League, they have had some strong campaigns in recent seasons. They were losing finalists in 2019 and losing semifinalists in 2018 and 2021. They will therefore be gunning to go all the way this time round.
Mikel Arteta’s style appears to finally be paying dividends for the Gunners seeing the terrific start they have had in the Premier League. A perfect 5 wins from 5 games was brought to a halt by Manchester United at the weekend but they still lead the table despite the loss. They will be hoping to use this match to put that disappointing loss in the back banner.

Although Arteta is likely to bring in his youthful players for this competition, they still possess a lot of quality within their rank and file. The hosts have been out of sorts domestically and they will find the going even tougher when they come up against a team of the calibre of the visitors.
