A ticket to the last-16 is at stake as English giants Manchester United travel to Germany to take on RB Leipzig on Tuesday in the final round of Champions League group games.
RB Leipzig made a deep run in last year’s Champions League campaign, sweeping aside established sides to make the semi-finals where they were eventually eliminated by PSG. Their reward was landing in the group of death this season comprising PSG, Manchester United and Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side picked up two wins over Basaksehir, split up a win and a loss against the French Champions but also suffered a shock 5-0 thrashing at the hands of the Red Devils at Old Trafford at the end of October. They have the opportunity to avenge this loss.
They come into the game off the back of an entertaining 3-3 draw at the Allianz Arena against Bayern in the Bundesliga from which they will certainly draw a lot of confidence having twice led in that game against the treble winners.
United were in complete control of this group after winning away at PSG and crushing Leipzig 5-0 at Old Trafford on matchday 2. However a lack of defensive focus on matchday 3 saw them losing 2-1 to the group’s whipping boys Istanbul Basaksehir and although they recovered to win the return leg 4-1 at Old Trafford, the damage had already been done. PSG threw a spanner in the works, winning 3-1 in Manchester last week, meaning, all three teams are tied on 9 points and they have to earn their place in the next round by avoiding defeat in Leipzig.
Solskjaer’s team have been in fine form winning four of their last five matches including back-to-back second-half comeback Premier League wins over Southampton and Westham after trailing at halftime in both games. They have also won eight of their last 9 away games in all competitions.
The reverse game, although it ended 5-0 in United’s favor, was much closer than the scoreline suggests. Leipzig were 1-0 down with half an hour to play and very much in it before collapsing spectacularly. We expect another close and tactical game. United only need a point to qualify so the onus is on RB Leipzig to try and draw the first blood here. We anticipate a tight opening half that could possibly open up in the second as desperation sets in. We are backing more goals to be scored in the second half of this game @ 1.94 with Betway as our initial betting tip.
Both teams have been involved in some high scoring encounters in their recent outings. Leipzig have conceded six goals in just their last two games. United’s last 9 straight away games have seen Over 2.5 goals landing. Given both teams prolific home and away records, it’s difficult to call it one or another. We, however, feel there is a likelihood of goals flowing here and we are snapping up Over 2.5 goals @ 1.57 with Betway betting app for our final call of this clash.
