Revierderby

Borussia Dortmund will be looking to shake off their midweek Champions League loss when they host local rivals Schalke in the first Revierderby of the season on Saturday afternoon.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND

Dortmund have had a solid start to the season, winning 3 of the 4 Bundesliga games they have played so far. They beat Hoffenheim 1-0 last weekend with captain Marco Reus and Haaland coming off the bench to combine for the goal. They followed this up with a disappointing 3-1 loss at Lazio in their opening game of this season’s Champions League. Haaland was on the mark yet again to score his 22nd goal in 25 games for BvB.

The Norwegian wizard who has just been putting up some jaw-dropping performances for Dortmund should return to the starting lineup after starting on the bench at Hoffenheim.

Coach Lucien Favre will have to tinker up the team in the wake of that defeat at Lazio. He gave Reus his first start of the season in the game but it was clear that he still needs a few games under his belt to get his legs back after a long layoff due to injury. Gio Reyna who has had a great start to the season in his absence is likely to get the nod to start ahead of him.

SCHALKE 04

Schalke survived relegation from the Bundesliga last season by the skins of their teeth, needing a final-day victory and other favourable results to escape the hangman’s noose. They started this season with an embarrassing 8-0 loss at champions Bayern prompting the club’s board to part ways with David Wagner and replacing him with Manuel Baum.

Things have not improved at all for them, going on to lose a couple of more games before finally picking up their first point of the season last weekend in a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin, with substitute Goncalo Paciencia levelling the scores with a beautiful header, effectively ending a seven-game losing streak for Schalke.

Baum is still looking for his first win, which incidentally will be the first win for Schalke in 20 games! That header from Paciencia could earn him a starting slot ahead of Vedad Ibisevic as the coach tries to find anything to turn their fortune around.
