Finland vs Russia, Euro 2020, 16.06.2021
Finland will look to pick build on their bittersweet win over Denmark when they travel to the Krestovsky Stadium to lock horns with Russia on matchday two of Euro 2020 Group B.
Russia laid an egg against Belgium in their opener but have another chance to make up for it when they welcome Finland to Saint Petersburg.
Despite Finland’s opening-day win over Denmark the main story from the game remained the shock and anxiety that surrounded Christian Eriksen’s condition following his horrific cardiac arrest on the pitch in the first half of the game.
With news coming from the hospital that the Inter Milan playmaker was well and in stable condition, both sets of players elected to continue playing, and Finland’s Joel Pohjanpalo’s header coupled with a late saved penalty by their keeper Lukas Hradecky was enough for them to claim all three points on offer.
That victory sent them to the top of Group B and puts them in a position to advance to the next round if they can sustain the effort in their remaining group games.
Russia had no answers for a marauding Belgium side as Lukaku’s 10th-minute – accompanied by a fitting tribute to his Inter Milan teammate Eriksen, put the world’s number-one ranked nation on course for a comfortable 3-0 win in their opening clash.
Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov was visibly disappointed with the lack of fight following that first goal as his side, who are usually reliable when playing in front of their home crowd, played second fiddle throughout the match.
He will be looking for a swift response here against a side they have had great success against, winning all four of their previous encounters.

FINLAND VS RUSSIA PREVIEW AND BETTING PREDICTIONS
Russia will be out to put Saturday’s defeat on the back burner and draw some inspiration from their 2018 World Cup performance where they made the most of home support to make a glorious run all the way to the quarter-final, only losing out on Croatia in a penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw. Prior to Saturday’s loss, they were undefeated in their previous five home games, with three wins and a couple of draws. We feel they have what it takes to rebound from that loss here. They will take the attacking initiative here and we fancy them to score the first goal of the game @ 1.52 as the first of our Euro 2020 betting tips here.
Despite their win over Denmark, Finland were not really impressive in that game. They only had that one shot on goal which they duly converted and they were lucky Denmark’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg poor penalty saved the day. The corner count was 9-0 for the Danes which tells you all you need to know. Russia is likely to be as if not more dominant here. We are therefore backing them to get at least 3 more corners than Finland @ 1.61 to close out tips for this match.
