Manchester City vs RB Leipzig, UCL, 15.09.2021

With the memories of the bitter loss in last season’s final still fresh in their mind, Manchester City will be looking for redemption as they embark on a new quest for European glory this season by locking horns with an out-of-sorts RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening.

So close yet so far. RB Leipzig have been a pale shadow of the side that finished 2nd in the Bundesliga last season and made it to the knockout phase of the Champions League to start this season. They lost their manager Julian Nagelsmann to Bayern Munich in the summer and he came back to haunt them with his new side at the weekend as the Bavarians ran roughshod over them with a comprehensive 4-1 victory which was their third loss on the trot after they also lost to Mainz and league leaders Wolfsburg.

New manager Jesse Marsch expressed some concerns about his team following that loss and he has had a very short turnaround time to try and prepare his team for this tough assignment.

The omens don’t look too good for them though as they have come up way short in their away matches against English opposition, losing to Manchester United and Liverpool 5-0 and 2-0 respectively in their most recent trips to England.

Manchester City had a nearly perfect fairytale story on their way to the final last season. They breezed through the group stages and won both legs of their knockout matches including against German sides Monchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund en route to the final. They have been topping their groups with ease in recent seasons but with a Messi-loaded PSG in this group, topping the group may not be guaranteed this time. As a result, we expect them to go all-out here to set the tempo in the group with a match against PSG coming up before the break.
