Manchester United welcome last year’s Champions League finalists PSG at Old Trafford for a potentially explosive encounter on Wednesday night.
Contrary to the expectations of many pundits when the draws for Group H were done, Manchester United sit top of Group H going into the penultimate match of the group phase, needing to just avoid defeat against the French champions, or indeed against RB Leipzig on the final matchday to advance to the next round from the group.
United’s performances in the group matches have basically been a microcosm of their inconsistent season – winning at PSG and at home against Leipzig but losing to the group’s whipping boys Istanbul Basaksehir, before regaining control with a 4-2 win over them in the return leg at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils come into this match full of confidence after winning four straight games across all competitions, with a standout performance from former PSG forward Edinson Cavani in the 3-2 comeback win over Southampton at the weekend. He is expected to start here.
PSG have barely looked like the team that straddled through this competition like a colossus last season, reaching the finals where they lost to eventual champions Bayern Munich. They lost the opener at home to Man United and also lost away at Leipzig. They are now facing a real possibility of failing to advance from this group heading into this penultimate round of fixtures.
They have also looked average in Ligue 1 where they have failed to win their last two straight games, throwing a 2 goal lead to eventually lose 3-2 to Monaco a couple of weeks ago and drawing 2-2 with Bordeaux at the weekend leaving them just two points clear at the top of the league.
Coach Thomas Tuchel is obviously under a lot of pressure to get a result here.
The attacking options on display for both of these teams. Man United have a variety of attacking options that they can deploy for this game. Cavani showed his sleek movement and sharp instincts at the weekend and that may just earn him a starting slot against his former club. PSG on their part, with an attacking lineup that includes Neymar, Mbappe and Di Maria always carry a goal threat. As a matter of fact, they have only failed to score in one Champions League group game in the last three seasons. The defences for both teams have looked suspect this season. We are backing both teams to score @ 1.59 with Melbet as our first betting prediction for this game.
PSG cannot afford to lose here. They have invested far too much to exit this competition at this stage. They won at Old Trafford on their last visit in 2019 but have since lost twice to Man United in Paris, throwing away winning positions in both of those games. With the stakes so high, we feel PSG will rise to the occasion and keep their Champions League dream alive. We are backing them to win or draw @ 1.46 with Meltbet Welcome Bonus as our final call.
