Lyon

Lyon had a somewhat balanced campaign throughout the group stages with 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats and were lucky to qualify from the group with just 8 points, dramatically drawing 2-2 after going 0-2 down against RB Leipzig on the last day of the competition and they eventually finished second behind the German side who ended up topping the group.

Les Gones have nevertheless endured one of their toughest domestic campaigns in years. A 2-0 over Metz at the weekend brought a little respite in an otherwise disappointing season. That win lifted them to 7th on the Ligue 1 log but they are still seven points adrift of third-paced Rennes. It was their first win in the last four games.

They have suffered injuries to some of their key players. None more significant than Dutch forward Memphis Depay who has been a revelation ever since he signed for the French club from Manchester United. He suffered a knee injury that has ruled him out for the rest of the season. He was their stand-out performer during the group stages, scoring in five of their six games. They are also missing Jeff Reine – Adelaide and Youssef Kone who have knee and ankle injuries respectively. Leo Dubois and Oumar Solef are also in a race to be fit in time for the match.

Coach Rudi Garcia who replaced former Arsenal midfielder Sylvinho following a horrendous start to the Ligue 1 campaign, will be pinning his hopes on striker Moussa Dembele who has had a terrific season thus far. He has scored 20 goals in all competitions this season, although, curiously, none of these have come in the Champions League. He will be hoping to break the ice on Wednesday night to give the home fans something to cheer about in a season they would love to forget.

JUVENTUS

When the Bianconeri signed Cristiano Ronaldo 18 months ago, they made it clear to all and sundry that bothered to hear that they had their eyes set on Europe’s most glorious and most coveted club competition prize – the Champions League trophy. After all, Cristiano was still in his prime and had shown no signs of slowing down. His record and pedigree on Europe’s greatest club competition speaks for itself.

Ronaldo is quietly having a superb season following a relatively average campaign last season – if his standards is anything to go by. He has scored 19 goals in his last 15 appearances, scoring in his last 11 straight games. His experience in this competition will be crucial for the Italian club as he sets his eyes on winning another Champions League trophy with a third different club with Juventus hoping to once again bask in the glory of a European triumph after being in the periphery for so long.

Although the Turin side come into this tie as massive favorites, coach Maurizio Sarri has been a man under pressure. Although a 2-1 win over the weekend at Spal jolted them back to the top of Serie A, they have been far from convincing this season. Losses against Napoli and Verona in their last 5 games had the fans training their guns on coach Sarri. They are only one point ahead of Lazio and have a difficult top of the table clash against Inter Milan this Sunday. Anything short of a win will certainly put more pressure on the coach.

His focus however is on this fixture. He has been boosted by a return to fitness of defender Giorgio Chiellini. Last summer’s signings Matthijs, Adrien Rabiot and former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey have settled in well and will be looking to provide the Old lady of Turin an edge in this tie and further down the line in the quest for domestic and European success.

The Italian side does not have too many injury concerns. Douglas Costa is one notable absentee, out with a knee injury. Pjanic and Khedira are still on the sidelines while striker Gonzalo Higuain is listed as doubtful with back problems.

BETTING PREDICTION

The loss of Lyon forward Memphis Depay to a season ending injury is absolutely devastating for them as it curtails their attacking abilities against a formidable team. Juventus some into this game on a high after regaining top spot in the Serie A with superstar Cristiano Ronaldo putting up his best performances in a Bianconeri shirt.

On the basis of the form of the two teams and the strengths of the squads available, it is difficult to see any other result other than an away win for Juventus. There is so much gulf in quality between the two teams with the Italians having so much more within their ranks on to take full control of this tie in this first leg and ease any pressure when the tie returns to Turin for the second leg.

Our predictions for the game are therefore: Juventus Win @ 1.98 and Juventus to score First Goal @ 1.67. You can find these odds and many other betting options at Bet9ja. For more sports betting tips click here.
