Sparta Prague vs Rapid Vienna, UCL Qualification, 28.07.2021

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Sparta Prague will be looking to turn this tie around when they welcome Rapid Vienna at the Stadion Letna on Wednesday night.

Ladislav Krejci II’s quickfire opener seemed to throw a spanner in the works but a brilliant 2nd half double from Rapid’s Christoph Knasmullner secured a vital win for the home team.

With the tie so delicately balanced, this second leg should offer us a treat. We will explore Betwinner Registration Bonus prices for our betting tips in this preview.

Sparta Prague looked to be on course to end their long wait for a seat at the high table with the crème de la crème of Europe’s premier football club competition when they opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, stunning the 20,000 strong Allianz Stadion home crowd and holding onto the lead until halftime. They however had no answers to a barrage of attacks from Rapid Vienna as they conceded two second-half goals and lost the game 2-1.

They now have it all to do considering UEFA’s rule change on away goals means the goal they scored counts for naught and they have no choice but to chase a win here.

Pavel Vrba’s side have nevertheless been formidable in the Czech capital and will need to bring that home form to bear if they are to turn this tie on its head.

Rapid Vienna showed great character and determination to secure the win in that 1st leg but they cannot rest on their laurels here. They failed to carry the momentum from that win into the new Austrian Bundesliga season, as they went down 2-0 at home to Hartberg in their opening game of the season at the weekend.

Dietmar Kuhbauer will be looking for a quick turnaround from his charges in this match where they hold all the aces. Having secured the win, all the pressure is on the home team to get themselves back into the game and this could play into Rapid Vienna’s hands.

Like the hosts, they too have been out of the Champions League since the 2005-2006 season and their fans have been yearning to return to wine and dine with the kings of Europe.

Sparta have no choice but to go for Rapid Vienna’s jugular from the opening whistle. They got a bit of a shot in the arm after the 1st leg loss when they kicked off the domestic league with a thrilling 3-2 win over Sigma Olomouc in this very venue. Rapid on the other hand lost their own domestic opener and that could potentially shake their confidence coming into this game. Given the state of the tie, we fancy Sparta to do all the early running and we are backing them to score the opening goal of the game @ 1.63 as our initial betting prediction.

That said, we do not quite expect this to be another free-scoring affair. Vienna is unlikely to go all out here given the advantage they hold from the first leg. They have shown their ability to keep things tight when needed, with six clean sheets in their last 10 games. Much as Sparta will pile up the pressure, we feel Rapid have more than what it takes to keep them at bay for the most part. We are therefore picking Under 3.5 goals @ 1.49 at Betwinner as our final call for the game.
