Tottenham vs Leipzig

North London goes agog for the return of the Champions League as Tottenham hosts Leipzig in a round of 16 first-leg tie. Leipzig play on the front foot and are always eager to attack, and Spurs, on the other hand, will want to be in a great position come the second leg, which means fans and neutrals alike could be in for a great night of football. On paper, this seems like two equal teams and a tight match should unfold.

Tottenham

In an increasingly tightly-packed top four or top five (considering Manchester City’s Champions League ban), Tottenham currently occupy fifth position on the EPL table, sitting only one point behind Chelsea on 40 points from their 26 matches. Mourinho’s charges come into this match on the back of four wins in the last five matches, although the last two matches have been hard-fought and won in the dying stages of the match.

They have also avoided defeat in the last seven matches. Last season’s finalists haven’t been all that convincing, but they have managed to eke out wins and stay in important competitions. Since they lost to Liverpool (who doesn’t?) they have managed to win four on the bounce when playing at home, so that should give them a much-needed confidence boost.

Worrying though, especially for a Jose Mourinho team, is the Spurs’ defence; they’ve conceded six goals in the last five matches. Considering Leipzig are a front foot team, the defence will be tested. In the group stages of the competition, they finished second in their group on 10 points with three wins, one draw and two losses.

The two losses came at the hands of Bayern Munich, where they conceded ten goals home and away. At home, they conceded nine goals in three matches, including seven in a hapless display against the perennial German champions. However, that was some time ago and the North London club has since changed the manager. That said, the cracks in defence are still there.

Leipzig

Julian Nagelsmann’s men are currently going toe-to-toe with Bayern in the race for Bundesliga title, and sit only one point behind them in second place. Prior to winning their last match 3-0 at home to Werder Bremen, Leipzig had gone four matches without a win – a run that ensured they lost the top spot on the table. For a club only founded in 2009, RBL have grown in leaps and bounds.

While they qualified for the Champions League last season, they didn’t make it out of the group stage, and they dropped into the Europa League. This season, however, they finished first with 11 points in a group containing Lyon, Benfica and Zenith. So this is new territory for the team, and they could well be trumped by the experience of a team that reached the final last season.

In the group stage they won three matches, drew two and lost only once, scoring 11 and conceding eight goals. They are yet to lose in their last four away matches in the competition. Interestingly, they have also scored at least two goals in each of those matches.

Nevertheless, their general away form at the moment is not too great as they are without a win in their last four away games in all competitions, a run that includes matches against Bayern and Borussia Dortmund.

Tottenham vs Leipzig Betting Tips and Predictions

As mentioned earlier, Tottenham have eked out positive results despite not playing well, and have currently won or drawn five of their last five matches, including four wins in that run. Leipzig, on the other hand, just won their first match in five matches. When you also look at the German’s club recent away records, they are yet to win in four matches. Consequently, we reckon that a double chance bet on Tottenham is a good bet. Therefore this is our betting tip.

If you’re interested in the goals market, backing a conservative over 1.5 goals makes more sense, considering all five of Spurs’ last five games have had over 1.5 goals, and four of five for Leipzig had recorded the same. Betway offers the following odds: Tottenham double chance – 1.47 odds; over 1.5 goals – 1.25 odds. You can bet easily with the Betway App. Before you register take a look at our Betway review.
