Group A has the usual suspects Czech Republic and Netherlands. The surprise package thus far has been Iceland. The form of Gylfi Sigurdsson, who plays for Swansea in English Premier League, has kept Iceland in the hunt for qualification. Czech Republic is in pole position having won all its matches so far while Iceland’s only loss has been to the leaders Netherlands. The Oranjes are struggling to be consistent and have an extremely important match against Turkey coming up. Overall, it is an interesting group and Czech Republic looks the only team which is slightly relaxed at this moment. The odds are also reflective of this as Unibet offers 1,08 for Czech qualifying. Unibet further offers odds of 2,50 for Iceland to qualify but their current form indicates it could be a nice betting option. Slightly more adventurous would be betting on Turkey to qualify, which is offered at odds of 3,0. The riskiest option, that we can’t rule out at this point, would be Netherlands to miss the qualification for awesome 9,0.
Group B is slightly more open with Israel, Wales, Cyprus and Belgium trying to fit into the top two positions. Belgium are the initial favorites and have a crucial weekend with games against Cyprus and Israel – both above them in the standings. Gareth Bale and Wales are looking to bury the ghosts of previous heartbreaks and continue their surge. How they fare against Israel, Belgium and Cyprus in the next three games will determine where they finish. Bet365 offers an enticing 2,25 on Wales qualifying from the group. The runaway leaders Israel are put at odds of 1,80 for qualification by Unibet. An interesting betting tip is also to go for Belgium as the group winner. William Hill offers 1,30 for that selection.
Group C has powerhouses Spain trying to catch up runaway leaders Slovakia and at the same time keep Ukraine at a distance. Patchy form of the two-time defending champions has put spot light on the tie against Ukraine on 27th March. With both teams locked on 9 points, it would be a battle of wits to maintain pressure on Slovakia, who is 3 points apart. Slovakia’s form and tally has meant that the odds for their qualification offered by Unibet are just 1,25 while Ukraine is offered odds of 1,75 to qualify. It remains to be seen if the market adjusts its expectations on Ukraine after their match against Spain. All in all, another exciting group with three teams throwing their hat in the ring.
The only problem for the national coaches is the large gap between matches thus disturbing their rhythm. They will be praying that their star players can carry the club form on national duty. However surprises will happen!
