Manchester City have dominated the English domestic competitions in the last decade. They won their fifth Premier League title with a few games to spare and tied that up with a fourth consecutive EFL Cup. However, on the continental stage, they are yet to stamp their authority. They brought on Pep Guardiola specifically for this but even the Catalan coach has come up trumps on a number of occasions but now has the chance to right the past shortcomings.

The Sky Blues have been in imperious form in this season’s edition of the competition, winning 11 of the 12 matches they have played thus far. Only a goalless draw against Porto when Pep fielded a largely second-string side, having long qualified for the knockout stage, prevented a flawless campaign.

Guardiola has taken his foot off the pedal in the EPL since clinching it to give his big names a breather. They unclenched their claws on the final day of the season with five unanswered goals at home against Everton and will look to carry that momentum here.

Chelsea looked set to end the season on a high but their performances over the last couple of weeks have left a lot to be desired. They lost the FA Cup final to Leicester and fortuitously made it to the top four despite losing to Aston Villa in their final EPL match, as their FA Cup conquerers Leicester lost at home to Spurs to drop down to 5th when the final tallies were done.

The Blues have been on an upward trajectory under new coach Thomas Tuchel and they will feel that a Cup triumph here would be a just reward for their efforts. They have impressed in this competition with wins over Porto and the Madrid-based Atletico and Real Madrid who they dispatched of in the semis.

Like his counterpart in the opposite dugout, Tuchel also knows the pain of coming so close yet so far in this competition. This will be his second straight appearance in the final having lost last year’s final with PSG to Bavarian outfit Bayern Munich.

This will be a game of very thin margins. Both teams have been solid defensively especially in this competition. Man City have kept eight clean sheets in their 12 Champions League fixtures this term. With Ruben Dias and John Stones set to be recalled to the centre of the defence, Chelsea’s misfiring forwards will be in for a long afternoon. Chelsea on their part have also been a tough nut to crack in the competition, conceding just 4 goals in their 12 games. This defensive intensity has been ramped up under Tuchel. With this in mind, we feel there is value in backing Under 2.5 goals @ 1.61 with Melbet as our initial betting tip.
